On November 27, the Comité Colbert will unveil design-colbert.fr, a virtual creation developed with “Le Pavillon,” the creative laboratory at Le Palais de Tokyo headed by artist Gerald Petit. The idea was to showcase the winners of the Young Designers Competition and explore new esthetic codes. A creation to visit online from November 27 to December 25 2008.

Young Designers Competition: 2008, a year for records
This was a year for record numbers: 1,600 entries, 35 luxury houses involved 46 winners and 38 projects. Over the last twenty years, the competition has earned an excellent reputation for the luxury sector in the field of design. Many French art and design schools have built luxury crafts into their curriculum.

Internships at Colbert companies give YDC winners a chance to realize their prototypes under the supervision of first-rate craftsmen. But the Comité Colbert decided to go farther and explore new territory: the Web. It turned to Le Pavillon, the laboratory of contemporary creation at Le Palais de Tokyo. Objective: keep a finger on the pulse of the new creative and esthetic codes emerging on the Web.

“There’s a natural affinity between contemporary art and luxury. We talk the same language based on the creative process. The Internet, with its creative ferment, is opening up a new world of the imagination that is shaping the minds of next generation. It is imperative for the luxury industry to explore this world and be part of it,” points out Élisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, President and CEO of the Comité Colbert.

The installation created by Gerald Petit and his group of artists immerses the visitor in a poetic, other-worldly ambience. One part, Les Sémiophores, presents the 46 winning students and their creations, with off-camera commentary to tell each story of each. In some cases, the central focus is the object itself.

Online users can become cyber-collectors
Some visitors navigating through the site will get a chance to download a work, free of charge, from a Limited Edition collection created especially for the occasion. You need to be one of the first hundred visitors to a given work of art and also visit the web site as often as possible, because these special opportunities arise at random during the 29-day period of the exhibition.

L’Agora, a platform for talking about design, digital creation and innovation
L’Agora joins the two other parts of the project: Les Semiophores, which tells the stories of these creations, and L’Encyclopédie, which is the place to go for information about YDC winners, their schools and participating companies. During the month of the exhibition, the Agora talk show will be shown on a dedicated Web TV channel, courtesy of Orange-innovation.fr, our partner in this undertaking.

18-21 september 2008, Truman Brewery London, Uk

Tent London is back this September, making East London a vibrant design destination again during the London Design Festival. What sets this show apart from the other key events is that Tent London is a consumer show. The vast eleven-acre Truman Brewery site allows the design industry to mingle with the public, curious locals and a few celebrities.

Tent London 2008

Exhibitors can both carry out business deals and sell their designs direct to the public from their stands. This mix makes for a relaxing yet energised environment. Until Tent London launched last year, most events that took place during the London Design Festival were aimed mainly at the trade audience, with the public being allocated a day when they could browse for an entry fee. Tent London has turned this on its head – after all, good design should be accessible to all.

In 2007, Tent London received in excess of 18,000 visitors – not bad for a brand new design event in London. The show presented over 300 exhibitors who covered every aspect of design; from vintage to modern, art and architecture, and a number of stops in between. Home-grown talent was prevalent throughout the show with designers from Cornwall to Shetland. Over seventeen countries exhibited with several designers and collectives exhibiting from Italy, Japan, Holland, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Portugal and France.

The Hanger Chair is a folding chair based on one of the ultimate storage systems: the modest hanger. It allows us to store clothes in an orderly fashion. Most houses or flats are equipped with a wardrobe to receive the object.

Hanger Chair designed by Philippe Malouin

By morphing the function of the hanger with that of the folding chair, a new hybrid is born: a Hanger Chair that has a function, even when not in use, to store our clothes in an orderly fashion.

Shop design, distribution and visual merchandising
Flagey, Brussels, Studio 1, Tuesday 23 September 2008 from 9h to 19h, followed by a conference at 20h with Patrick Jouin in the context of Design September

DESIGN BRUSSELS 2008

In collaboration with the launch of the Competition for the Brussels Commerce Design Award, developed from an original concept of the City of Montreal, Pro Materia and Design September invite you to attend an international colloquium on this theme, organised for Tuesday 23 September 2008 at Flagey (Studio 1), in the locales of Design September. This day dedicated to news and exchange is open to professionals (those responsible for retail spaces, brands and distributors in design and architecture, architects, interior designers, designers, entrepreneurs, property promoters, communication and advertising agencies, government bodies…) and envisages a better economic and commercial development for Brussels by putting the accent on creativity and innovation in the design of points of sale and their impact on the quality and the improvement of urban life, the places and the attitudes of consumption and the capital’s image in Belgium and abroad. Key to success for the commercial activities and perceptions of a city, this colloquium proposes through the expertise and talent of professionals and companies active in the development of commercial spaces, adequate tools and lasting solutions for the promotion and distinctive distribution of products and services. It will allow, moreover, connecting the added value of the sales and well-being areas (shops and boutiques in all sectors, restaurants, bars, cafés, service oriented shops and shopping centres…) to the transformation of local urban spaces.

At the Commerce Design Brussels, shop design, distribution and visual merchandising colloquium at Flagey the 23 September 2008, the Commerce Design Brussels competition –Brussels Commerce Design Award– will be officially launched for the Brussels Region. Developed from an original concept by the City of Montreal, Pro Materia and Design September have organised this free competition with the support of the Brussels Region and of Design September, with the aim of awarding prizes to the best commercial redevelopments, in all business categories.

The call for candidates is made via a registration form which will be distributed at the time of the colloquium and to which must be attached specific documents such as images on a CD, project plans, descriptive texts… They will be distributed within a large network of professional partners, of press relations and on the internet site. Following the reception of the candidates dossiers, a jury composed of professionals from different disciplines (architecture, interior design, design, graphics, urban design …) will meet to select 20 businesses who will be nominated for the Grand Prix of the Jury and of which 1 will be chosen by a public vote at the end of a large promotional campaign. These 20 prize winners will then be ambassadors of quality in design and will be a source of inspiration for the shopkeepers who would like to call upon the services of an interior designer or of a creative for the design of their shop. The adopted criteria to evaluate the projects are as much the quality of design (aesthetics, creativity, coherence interior/façade/graphics, functionality, security, ease of upkeep, durability…), as the context and impact on the city and its tourists or inhabitants. The jury will select, where possible, projects which reflect the budgets, the commercial vocations, the identities and the cultures of the areas and their various styles.

The promotional campaign which will accompany this Commerce Design Brussels competition –Brussels Commerce Design Award– will allow the awarded businesses an increase in notoriety and commercial appeal. During the gala evening which will take place before summer, a trophy created by a Belgian designer, will be presented to the 20 winners of 2008/09, as well as labels to put in the window as a symbol of quality and of recognition. As for the public’s prize it will be proclaimed during an event organised for the press in the locales of Design September in 2009. The Internet site as well as the annual publications will also be permanent showcases for all the awarded businesses and for the dynamic retail market
in Brussels.

The international design community has a not-to-be-missed appointment from October 16th to 20th in Turkey: Istanbul Design Week 2008 aims to be one of the most important events in the Euro-Asiatic area.
During the previous edition more than 50,000 visitors from all over the world came on the Golden Horn on this important occasion: in 2008 Istanbul Design Week promises to be an even greater success thanks to its new formula.

idw 2008

For the first time Istanbul Design Week will be organized and managed by Design in Turkey, a joint venture between Dream Design Factory (dDf) and DesignPartners bringing together the vibrant energy of Turkish culture and Italian experience.
Dream Design Factory (dDf) is a communication agency specialized in design with offices in Istanbul and London. DDF is the original organiser of Istanbul Design Week.
DesignPartners is the first Italian integrated business services group dedicated to international firms who view design as a key and strategic asset; among various activities it also organises the internationally renowned event “ZonaTortona Design” in Milan.

The joint venture intends to create a format that opens new frontiers, expands, reaches out of the territory, in the wake of “ZonaTortona Design”: Istanbul Design Week 2008 will be a local event with an international perspective.
An opportunity for companies to present their products and activities to an international audience, in a contemporary country with a fast growing economy. Istanbul, meeting point of different traditions, will be the European Capital of Culture in 2010.

idw 2008

The 2008 edition will see exhibitions, workshops, conferences and night & day events taking place in the extraordinary setting of the Golden Horn. The art direction of Istanbul Design Week is by the Italian architecture and design studio Cibic & Partners, one of the most important and active of the international design world.

Cibic & Partners’ project will emphasize the deep spirit of Turkey in every location involved. The primary point and main exhibition area is the Old Galata Bridge, where the event is held since 2005: it embodies the union between East and West, past and future, tradition and innovation. The bridge will be covered by a tent system evoking the old oriental markets atmosphere, with the merchant activities, full of sounds and perfumes. In front of it a tower structure will mark the entrance to the exhibition area.
The other prestigious venues included in the overall exhibition area of 15,000 sqm are the stunning Basilica Cistern; the Kadir Has University, where workshops and conferences will be held; the Old Hat Factory area, a small ‘village’ in the open air with a creative atmosphere.

Istanbul combines historical heritage with a strong industrial and architectonic development,” explains Maurizio Ribotti, co-CEO of Design in Turkey with Arhan Kayar. “The city is living a moment of experimentation and creativity, thanks also to it’s central position geographically speaking. Many international design companies have understood this and want to be here. We believe that Istanbul will become one of the most innovative design destination in the near future”.
